Is an ultra-tight strategy optimal when you are near the lead in chips but have not made it to a money seat yet?

Example :

8 players left. Top 3 take the money.

I have 1250 and am second best. Leader has 1750. Another with a 1000 and the rest short stacked. I'm in no imediate danger of blinding out but the short stacks are in serious jeopardy.

My play has tended to be erratic and I've lost a few money seats by locking up with someone and getting drawn out on. I also tend to go after someone who's shortstacked and who's all-in won't put too big of a dent on my chip stack if I lose.

Is going ultra tight the solution and let the others beat each other up and blind themselves out? Is there a standard type of play?
