Measuring a raise in NL HE, Hatchet Harry, 19. Sep 2002 10:51 | ||

| Ok, 1st round of a 10 seater NL HE tourney I'm sittin on the button with 1000 in chips and get dealt AKs. Flop brings Kd, 3s, 8s. 4 players check the betting to me! I really want to raise. But how much? The above is just a for instance, but i'm faced with this problem every day wether it be before or after the flop, the turn or the river. My strategy up to now has been based purely on my feel for the table and how much caffine i've had. Should I be calculating my raises more scientifically in line with pot odds, or the size of the opponents stack. Any info on NL raising strategy would be much appreciated Thanks HH | ||

| Just as a measure of my play, in the above scenario i'd probably just make it a raise to 5% of my stack, hoping to get some calls. As long as the turn did not pair the board or was an A, then i'd throw in about 50% of my stack assuming it was checked around to me. | ||

| Hi Harry I think you are approaching this issue from too mathmatical a perspective. You should calculate what you should bet based on your opponents propensity to call with hands in which you would want a call from. You should not make so high a bet that all your opponets would only call with hands that are correct to call with. This equation should be based on your stack...your opponents stacks and the style of your opponents and your image. Roy Cooke.. on 19. | Something around double the current pot size if you think someone will play with kings and a lower kicker, and be sure to adjust this up or down depending on your target opponent as Roy suggests. You might also want to sometimes lean towards a bet just smaller than the pot size if you also have the flush draw with your top pair. You're looking to get raised so you can have the option to come over the top all-in. How your stack size compares to the other players in the hand, and how much of a raise you made pre-flop are also important considerations when deciding how much to bet on the flop. Another quick and dirty calculation involves players who are potentially pot stuck. If someone on the flop has a stack which is less than half the current pot size, mentally add that stack amount to the pot before considering your bet when there is another player in the hand who does have enough chips. Later in a tournament, you may also want to round off the amount to include any odd low denomination chips you may have, so that you won't have anything that can be raced off. Of course this won't apply to an on-line game. With blinds that are about to become 25 and 50, this is a good time to rid yourself of that odd red chip by betting say T205 instead of T200 (just incase you lose the hand). | ||
