| OK, perhaps my most obscure poker book is "Poker for Women -- A Course at Destroying Male Opponents at Poker and Beyond." The part after the dash is actually a subtitle, and the book hasn't been in print for 10 years or so. The concept behind the book was that women have advantages at poker, because of the way males perceive them. These perceptions can be exploited. There are probably disadvantages also. What do you think the advantages are of being a woman poker player -- and the disadvantages? Straight Flushes, Mike Caro | ||

| Dear Mike, As a man, I know what my biggest disadvantage is: if she's a looker I'm distracted by primitive instincts and I'm thinking about something else. Very intimidating. Otherwise, I've come to realize that lots of women are excellent players and they have no problem confronting the opposition, even when they don't seem to have the best of it. They protect their stacks like my mom protected the cookie jar but are very willing to invest in good playing hands. If I'm in a big pot with more than one woman I know I'm in big trouble and if I kept records of such situations the results would show financial disaster. I look to fold like a rejected suitor and save myself for other "fish" (just an expression) in the sea. Lucky in love, Hank | ||

It would be hard to get sufficient statistical data, but I suspect that if you're in a poker game with many men and two or three women, it's is -- indeed -- an indication of stronger than usual hands for the situation when two women are competing. I'm not positive, but I'd bet on it. All of these types of observations that generalize the behavior of the sexes or races or cultural groups, of course, speak to social interaction that is subject to change as society changes.
