| I'm sitting in the big blind in a game that has been running all night with plyers coming in from broken tables. There are 5 callers, small blind folds. Two of the five have been opening rags to win hands the other three are solid players. I raise and the puck makes it three bets. I cap and everyone calls. On the flop it's Qs-Js-6h, I have the As in my hand so I bet out. Everyone calls. On the turn 6d hits. Scared someone is calling with bottom pair I check and so does everyone else. The river hits a Ks, I check and one of the loose players is thinking about betting. He checks and a solid player bets it out. The puck folds and I raise, I put the player who bet on an up and down straight draw. I think that the loose player may have caught a flush but didn't want to bet it as it was a low straight. He is thinking about calling the 40 so i flash my As, he folded a 3 high flush and I get called by K with a 10 kicker. I end up winning the hand but did I do the right thing? Should I have bet on the turn instead of relying on a move to win the hand? TIA for help. | ||

| Hi Fred Yes, you should have bet the turn...The fact that you have defined your hand to your opponents and the fact that you have Aces-up. You seem like you are playing not to lose a bet on the turn....when mentally you ar e in a frame of mind of playing not to lose....you will lose. BEt and if you get raised you must make a decision...but not betting is horrible...you might lose a big pot to a hand that would not have called a bet. Roy Cooke on 15. Keep in mind that although someone might have called with a six, you also have turned someone with QJ, who was waiting to pop the turn. Anyone with a lone Q or J, now has only two(trips), as opposed to five outs(trips plus kicker) on your aces. Further a hand like KT is now down to 4 outs (the nines), as you have two aces and the other two make you full. KT has two beautiful outs to making his straight only to run into your Aces full. So a 6 is not as bad as it may have seemed. >Scared someone is calling with bottom pair I check > and so does everyone else. Very bad in such a massive pot. You might be able to make a case for checking with the intention of raising, but I don't have the time to post EV equations. BET!! The river hits a Ks, I check and one of the loose > players is thinking about betting. IT seems, Fred, you have game selection down :) Let's think about this for a moment. You show an As. This means there are three ways for you to hold AA with a spade. Given your preflop play, and the board, you could certainly hold AKs. which would give you the flush. What else? Are you going to cap with ATs? So there is maybe one hand you can hold that makes a flush, and at least three ways you can hold AA with a spade. therefore, based only on this (and I am not counting all the other non flush hands that you can have such as AsKx), you are at least three times more likely to NOT have the flush. I am not considering how the hand was played or considered the fact that you SHOWED your As, which could change the Bayesean distribution to something more Caroesque. Overall, a general principle in big pots is to try hard to win them. This *usually* maximizes EV, but not always. This means betting and raising. Regards. | ||

| Thanks for the insight. right after I checked the turn I knew I made a mistake. I probably make an extra 40 by betting the turn. Next time, if there is a next time. BTW, backdoor, games are like that up here in Toronto. Plenty of low limit players with cash on payday that want to hit it in bigger limit games. If are ever in town come on by. I love watching better players, great learning tool. | ||
