Playing vs Straddler, 3Kings, 7. Sep 2002 23:58

I was playing in a $10-$20 game and on the button. The UTG decided to straddle. There was one caller when it got to me. I had As7s. With only one caller and the blinds and straddler having any possibilities, I raised. Both blinds folded and the other person called. There are 3 players and $90 in the pot. The flop comes three small cards with 2 spades and 1 club. It is checked to me and I bet. The straddler calls but the other player folds. There are 2 players and $110 in the pot. The turn brings another small club. The straddler bets and I call having a 4 to 1 draw with pot odds of 6 to 1. The river is the Ad giving me top pair. The straddler checks as do I. He had Qc8c.

I like my raise pre-flop to drive out the blinds and force the straddler to put in a third bet. I like my bet on the flop with the nut flush draw. I think my call on the turn (vs raise) was the right move as I had no hand at that point. My question is the river: should I have bet? I had been at the table only 15 minutes and hadn't gotten a feel for the other player. My first thought was he had two pair or a set and might be setting me up for a check-raise since he probably figured me for an A (pessimistic, I know) and thought I would bet it. Looking back however, if I bet, he wouldn't have called so the only thing a bet does is keep me from showing my hand (which wouldn't have been a bad thing).

I dislike your raise preflop with ace-shit suited in this situation. You want the blinds in, not out. You have a drawing hand that craves company. If no one had called the straddle bet, then raising is fine because you might be able to isolate the straddler who has a random holding. But when one player calls two bets cold, you know that you cannot isolate anyone. Therefore, simply calling and inviting the remaining players to call is the right play.

You should bet the river when checked to by one opponent, especially a straddler who is basically a gambling type anyway. You will get calls from worse hands. In this particular case, it probably did not matter since your opponent was drawing and missed. But if he had had just one pair, he would call your river bet.

In this situation, I don't want callers. I'm trying to knock out as many people as I can as I probably need to improve to win unless people think I already have a winner. This hand occurred 15 minutes into the table opening so no one had a read on me as this was the first hand I played that wasn't a blind and I don't play there enough for people to remember me. Although, there was one caller, if I could get him heads up, I liked my chances with my A-"shit". The more callers you have, the better hand you are going to need to win. I liked my chances better with two opponents, position and a raise then with 4 opponents, position, and no raise. The main reason to play poker is to win money. I ended up winning $145 from this pot. It could have been more, but i'd rather win small pots than lose big ones.

I like the raise on the flop assuming you cannot put the caller on a better Ace. I agree with Jim that the texture of the hand is a volume hand, but because one guy is a straddler and the other just called (therefor I think it unlikely he has a big ace or pair above 7's) this situation plays different from standard.

You should think about raising the turn if you think your hand MAY be good or if your opponent MAY fold a better hand. There is a lot of money in the pot and it is worth taking some risks for. If you would have missed and he would have bet you would have lost this pot!

I almost certainly would have bet the river. The only times I may not is if this player liked to make check-raise plays in these texture of situations and/or would not call with a hand that could not beat an Ace.
