?-strategy changes / rake change, timmer, 7. Sep 2002 15:21

Not to long ago one of my local casinos upped their rake by 33%.
from 10% to $3 to 10% to $4.

The game I play in is structured in the following manner:
$.5/$1/$4?$8.

I know playing in a raked game usually means playing tighter over all when compared to playing in a time game. Also I know that the over all structure of this game dictates a fairly tight standard in starting hands selection . All this being as it is, my questions are
as follows.

What types of hands, in general should I abstain from playing In a typical 7 card stud game in this limit with this structure. What types of hands should I be more willing to play. And what basic changes should I make in the play of hands that are normally excepted as *good starts* in a game of the original type?

I maintain that the house is really killing the game with this rake increase. But with the casinos, as their brand of callous greed being the norm, should I keep my present tight aggressive game as is and concentrate on game selection, Make the changes as suggested or just cash in my chips and play on line or home games exclusively?

PS I have allot of trouble with the loose to ludicrous structures of most online 7 Stud high games on line . I mostly don’t agree with them because they make most players biggest mistake ( PLAYING TOO MANY HANDS TOO FAR ) more correct than almost all other conventional live game structures . It is this mistake that I feel accounts for much of the profitability (risk to investment) available in more conventional game structures.

thanks

Hi Roy,

7 Card stud

a typical crowd of local (las vegas) LL players and tourists. few pots have less that 3 players at 3rd street the opening bet is usually completed but seldom raised. multiway rivers are common.

Hi Timmer

I think you might want to throw away your most marginal hands...however, it seems like these players will call you no matter what you have and your edge is still great...but I wouldn't change very much if at all.

If the pot lays you 4-1 on a 3-1 shot it doesn't matter if someone is raking the pot (yes...I understand it would be better if it was non-existant or lower) you are still getting a good bet. Just adjust your play to include the rake in your price.
