I am playing cards tonight with some friends of mine, from work, and am trying to get into the lo-limit, play everything you can, mode (at least my opponents will be doing that).

We have a good time, betting limits are .25- a dollar. No one gets hurt too bad, but boy, is it ever tough to play against 6 people that play anything at all.

Question though..... we have a husband and wife duo who play in the game. If the wife is leading the betting, or raising at all, then the husband will call all the way to the river to try to catch a miracle hand. I haven't figured out if it is to everyone elses advantage or disadvantage to have him doing this. What do you guys think?

Generally, if she has a hand, it's a solid one. Her spouse loves to play though, and occassionally he will hit his 4 outer and then begin re-rasing. This is when it can expensive. He used to re-raise on the come, but that seemed a bit fishy and we kind of let him know it.

It's a fun group, and I generally come home a winner, so I have no real complaints. I'll try to remember some of the more interesting hands of the night and maybe have some real life situations to discuss on this fine forum.

Later all.

Eric

A low-limit home game that I play in has basically the identical situation. The guy who throws the game has a girlfriend who sits in most of the time. They call each other most of the time, and are in a lot of pots together. Nothing they do is outright collusion, but they softplay each other at times, and do other things that they wouldn't against others at the table. If you didn't expect this or notice in the game (and many of my tablemates don't), it would be a disadvantadge, but since you do know, use the information to your advantadge. Think about their play when deciding where you sit, how you play a drawing hand, how you play a made hand, and how you play a monster. Their play benefits you the second you adapt your game to it. Play Smart, Smokey

Well, the game went well. We started the evening off with NINE players. The table was loose, and as I stated the stakes were a dolar max bet. We lost our first player by 11 after he dropped his initial $20 buy in. He loses constantly, and because he is a friend I have tried to counsel him to play better. I've offered him some of my poker books, but he just doesn't get it, or doesn't want to.

The husband and wife duo were up to their usual games. She plays a bit too loose for my liking, but does read players well, and is able to release a hand early enough to not cost her too much. The husband plays anything when his wife is in the hand, ANYTHING. He sucked out a few hands early on, and was up a healthy amount. She was about even, and I was rebuying for my second $20 after an hour of play. Damn river rates....

The husband and wife duo were next to leave, at around 1 AM. They had slowed as the night went on, and left just about $25 to the good combined. I was making headway, and was now ahead for the evening.

Long story short, eventually skill did win out on this night, as I won $53. We played until 3:30 am, so that's about $9, or nine big bets, an hour. I've won as much as $80 in this game, and lost $50 in the past, so the night was pretty good. We've had folks win upwards of $100, but I don;t think that will ever be me because I just don't play enough hands, drawing all the way to the river, to hit those monsters.

One hand of note. We wewre playing 6 handed towards the end of the evening, and I dealt 5 card stud hi-lo. Last card being dealt face down. It was only a quarter to see the 2nd card, so I took one off and hit J's. It was the highest card on the board and decided to slow play it. Next card was a Jack, no more slow playing as I didn't want to tip them off to the trips (yes, the remaining players are keen enough to pick up on this). Two callers, looks like they both are going low. Next card they both pair their door cards.

I bet out, player to my left folds, and the other guy RAISES! Now, a side note on our rules in this game, any low qualifies, but it must be 5 non paired cards for the low. So, I've got him dead to rights. I re-raise, he re-raises, I re-raise, and he finally thinks I may have trips and calls. (by the way, the doorcard he paired was 5's).

River card down, I bet without looking, and he RAISES!!!!!!!!! No freaking WAY!!!!!! I decide to look at my last card, it's a 9, jacks full of nines!! I re-raise, he re-raises...... we go in for about five raises each.

Finally he calls, turning over 7's full of fives. He had made two pair when he paried his doorcard, and hit his miracle full house on the river. I turned over Jacks full and took down a very nice pot. We all discussede the hand afterwards, and he admitted he didn't believe I had trip jacks, but thought I may have two pair on 4th st.

It was a fun night, but I'm getting too old for 4am bedtimes.

Three weeks to the Grand Gulfport, and probably some play for me in Grand Biloxi!
