| I'm just getting started at playing Texas Hold'em and need some help learning the game ( don't want to be the sucker at the table), what books would you folks suggest? I've read Andy Nelson's "Poker, A Winner's Guide" and it's left me with a lot of questions. What are the blinds? How do the change? What is the purpose of the big and little blinds?, How are they played? How can a player play the blinds to their advantage? | ||

| Greg, Following peoples advice from an early post, i've just purchased these two books. Although I hav'nt got around to reading Lou Krieger's book yet, I can safely vouch for the Lee Jones book. It is very good reading and gives you a whole starting strategy which makes you feel like you been playing for years at low limit tables. (it's quite easy to see who else has read it at the tables as well - LOL) I've still got a bit to go before my discipline adjusts to the necessary levels, but I'm already way up on my starting bankroll since reading the book. Best of luck HH | ||

| hey, a good book is ken warrens 'winners guide texas hold'em poker' I have found this book very useful when i started the playin hold em. it explains everything about the game that would be helpful for a new player. the blinds are used to foce action from the first two players to the left of the dearler by having them put money into the pot before the cards are dealt. Th big blind is always the same as the small bet and the small blind is one-half of the big blind. For example in a $2-$4 game the player to the immediate left of the "dealer" puts $1 dollar into the pot called the small blind. The player to the left of the small blind puts $2 into the plot, called the large or big blind. due to the fact that there are two blinds there is no ante in texas hold em as there is in stud and draw poker. the purpose of these blinds is to make sure there is always some chips for the winner, and its prevents players from just sitting at the table and never contributing to the pot. how to play them to your advantage is if you put up the one of the blinds it make it easier for you to call weaker hands to see the flop, there is alot more than that to learn about blinds, but that should help you for now. hope this helps you | ||

| Mad I am certain that Ken Warrens book is spread limit and the game is a whole different animal then structured limits.. You have very different drawing odds.. jim on 3. | A straddler is the first player after the big blind in flop games who voluntarily puts up a bet twice the size of the big blind before the cards are dealt. This player will now act last on the opening round, and all other players will be facing a double bet. The cutoff is the player just to the right of the player who has the button. | ||
