On line Etiquette Question, Eric Bush, 2. Sep 2002 10:26 | ||

| I was playing on line yesterday, on a site that shall remain nameless, and picked up AQs in the cutoff. Long story short I bet the whole way, one caller, to the river. I bluffed on the river when I made no pair. In retrospect this was a bad play, I mean if I had really thought long and hard about it I would have just checked, cause this guy cannot fold..... But, I bet, and he waits, and waits, and waits, and waits, and finally times out and is declared all-in. Ok, he had pair of 7's (bottom card on the board), and won, but here is the interesting part, he actually left the table. So, the timing oput was not a disconnect, but rather a calculated move on his part. I was mad, but I was beat anyway. I just wish he would have been a man (or woman) and called the last bet. So, I run into him again today in another game, and I asked him about it. He more or less admitted doing it and was surprised I had a problem with it. My question to everyone is this: Is it ethical, since it is available, to use the all-in feature in on-line poker? It changes the game, but it's not illegal. It's not collusion, it's not changing the program, it's just using a feature available to the player during the course of a hand. Personally, I think it's weak, and it's not part of the poker I learned how to play. Should I make it part of my game?? Eric | ||

| No in my opinion, if it was done purposefully it's plain and simple cheating. Although i'm against the all in on disconnect, I can appreciate that in some genuine cases a disconnection could cost someone a pot of money. (i've come accross it numerous times, but it's normally when the other player is on a weak hand so i don't loose much money to it) Of the sites that i've played, it seems Paradise has come up with the compromise, that if you use your all in without really disconnecting, you need to send support and e-mail explaining why and I assume that this is recorded somewhere (although i'm sure the more unethical players have found way's around this.) - I know the above, becuase I had to answer the door in a hand that was taking an age and my all in was used whilst still connected. I think as a golf player, I personally could'nt even contenplate purposefully cheating in a competitive environment, as I would loose any pleasure I got from the victory. But in the long run, this particular type of cheating is'nt going to make an online player any serious money so I don't really bother getting too upset about it. Regards HH | ||

| Timing out on purpose with weak hands such as low pairs instead of calling is clearly cheating. Compare it with live play, should a player have the right to any piece of the pot if he/she is'nt willing to call a river bet. Andy | ||

| Planet Poker's response is an excellent example of how the innocent are made to suffer for the acts of the dishonest few. Occasionally the prompts don't react when clicked.Players are still connected,they frantically type for help in the chat box,but they time out and are folded. It's happened to me,it's happened at tables where I'm playing,to players whose reputations are above reproach. Yet the angle-shooting slugs who thrive on being "clever" find a way around the software. Unplugging modems or phone lines or whatever. When I started playing online,all-in abuse enforcement relied on a limited number of aall-ins coupled with a player review.Before a reset,the support e-mail was checked for complaints.If an abuse pattern was evident,no reset. It is sad that we have come to need these unusually harse measures simply to enjoy an honest game of cards. | ||
