7 card starting hand, Brian Tipton, 31. Aug 2002 22:18

Awhile back, I was in a 1-5 7 card stud game. I had (K Q) Q. Normally, I would raise with this hand; but, this wasn't a normal hand. The players to my left and right had Ks. Two other players had Q as their up cards. There was a J and a 5 on the board as well. After the 5 brought it in for a $1, I decided to fold because I had one card to two pair at that point. The other players with K and Q folded as well. There was $2.75 in the pot when it got to me. The hand ended on 5th street so I didn't get to see the final cards. I prided myself on folding a pair of queens but, now I look back and think I should have raised. What are your thoughts?

with out a doubt a raise or fold proposition.

As you didnt describe the texture of the game its hard to tell what the correct play might be so I'll venture a WAG.

Remember in stud it is oftentimes correct to chase . it is also often correct to fold what seems to be the best hand on 3rd street.

Snce it was 1-5 and you are probibably up against a table full of dimwitted players who make all kinds of mistakes.I say in most cases a raise would be in order here because your Q's are most likely
best and your opponents are likely dead and is they do play for a raise
it will be easy to get away from the hand if they improve to two pair and you dont. And if you improve they will pay you off.

However, since you didnt say a thing about the A's and if they were the upcards of other players. also whether if your K and one of your Q's were suited and the liveness of that suit or the apparent live ness of the Str8, flush or the str8flush draw, or if these draws would carry the pot if they got there, or how the hand would be played It is difficult to summize if the above truely is a sound strategy.

you seem to be looking for a ABC answer for A - Z game like stud. If you like ABC games stick to Holdem'

The hand happened about 18 months ago. I couldn't tell you any details. I only remember that hand because you don't throw away queens too often for a $1 bet.

You did the right thing. Your Queens were dead. One of your kings was to your left and didn't raise, so he probably only had one king. You could have been risky and raised hoping the king to your left would fold if he didn't have another King down under. But, if he did, you are chasing an overpair uphill. It is no more correct to chase Kings with Queens than it is with 2's. Your only saving grace in the raise scenario would be if you caught an ace on 4th street giving you an opportunity to beat his kings.

If I were in that position, I would fold most of the time on 3rd street and sometimes raise to knock out the king to my left. If he rereaises, I am gone. If he just calls I may stay to catch an off card or two.

this is a clear fold at 1-5 with no ante. if it is in connecticut or somewhere where the 1-5 games have a 50 cent ante then it might be worth it to take a shot at raising but a fold is still the best play. it would have to be very favorable to make it worth a raise.
