raking pots?, Sky, 26. Aug 2002 17:05 | ||

| Mike -> Been waiting for your section on managing a card room =) I was involved in the running of a regular game last spring at school (off campus) that started as a couple friends getting together and playing for a couple hours once a week. The interest increased and we moved to a situation were we had a paid dealer and were charging players an hourly rate in our 'private club'. With the start up of classes coming, i have been receiving mails over the past couple weeks asking when the games are going to get rolling. Based on the increased interest (seemingly coming from online play) we are now looking to run games twice a week - a lower stakes night to feed a higher stakes game. With this move we are now talking about raking pots instead of the hourly charge, at least for the lower stakes night. My Question: With side pots created by all ins and split pots in high-low games how is the rake to be calculated? All in Example: $5/$10 game taking a $1.00 cut at $20, $40, $60 $1 is cut and Pot is now at $19. A player goes all in with $5.00, second player raises to $10, and a third and forth player both call the $10.00. We'd have a main pot of $39.00 and a side pot of $15 -- What pot would the $1.00 cut come from? The main pot or the side pot? High - low: this one seems a bit simpler and i assume that the total pot is raked and then split according to high low winners. Though with split pots based on all ins, it seems this one could become a bit tricky. If there were an online resource of how these are handled it would be appreciated. I have searched all of the online poker sites that i know of, and searched other poker related sites as well, though this question has eluded me. Sky | ||

| You need to make the rake a percentage of "all monies wagered" as is stated in Nevada gaming procedures. So in the situation mentioned if you have a 40 dollar pot and a 15 dollar side pot, (for a 5% rake) rake 2 bucks from the main pot and 75c from the side pot. You should get Paymar and Malmuths "The Professional Poker Dealer's Handbook" which addresses all these issues. | ||

| in a 5/10 game the smallest chip on the table would be $1 so raking 75c would introduce another chip denomination. Thanks for the book title. Going to find it now =). | ||
