| I would like to learn what the formula is for calculating the odds of making any specific hand. Example: What are the odds of being rolled up in 7 stud and how is it calculated....What are the odds of making a flush in 7 stud when starting with 3 suited cards and, again, what is the formula. Thanks, Moe. | ||

| Sorry, need to cite myself there. Some of the information I put there I learned from MCU and some from Roy West's "Seven Card Stud: How to win at low and medium limits." All was done from memory though. | ||

| the short version is that you take the chances of not making it on the next card and multiply it for each successive street. for example lets say you have a fourflush that is completely live on fourth street with 10 cards seen plus your own. that leaves 38 cards left and 9 of the suit. the chances of not making it on the next card is 29/38. that is .76 against making it on fifth. on sixth assume there are 4 more cards out and your hand is still live. now the odds are 25/34 which is .74. multiply the two and you get the odds, and so on. you are better off memorizing a table than you are learning how to calculate them because it gets complicated quickly when you are dealing with different hands, plus when you have a pair for example you are not just interested in the chances of getting two pair but also the chances of getting trips and filling. | ||

Odds of being rolled up can be calculated as follows: There are 4 cards of any particular rank and 52 cards in the deck. Dealing out a 3 card hand your probability of getting a card of that rank on the first card is 4/52, your probability of getting a card of that rank on the second card as well would be 3/51 (since one of the four is already in your hand and there are 51 cards left) and similarly the probability of getting the same rank card on your third card (after first recieving that rank on your first 2 cards) is 2/50. To get the total probability just multiply all these together, (4/52)*(3/51)*(2/50) = (24/132600) = .00018 . A formula to translate this to odds is if the probability is P the odds are (1-P)/P : 1, or 5524:1 against getting trips of a particular rank. Since there are 13 different ranks of cards, the probability of getting trips of any kind on the first 3 cards is 13 times the probability of getting trips of a particular rank, or .00235 - translating this into odds we get 424 : 1 against. The odds of making your flush when your first 3 cards are suited is dependent on how many more of your cards are already out. I can show you how to calculate the odds of this given how many of your suit is out, but it does require a little deeper math (basicly you take the number of combinations of cards you can get to complete your hand and divide that by the total number of combinations of cards possible and that will be the probability of completing your hand). If you want me to go through the hairy details I can, just let me know. | ||
