Bad Etiquette or not?, Hatchet Harry, 25. Aug 2002 09:12

Being relatively new to the game, I was really interested in a reaction I got in a $10 NL Holdem PS tourney.
I had just finished watching a few re-runs of Late Night Poker, about one of the only TV shows dedicated to Poker that runs here in the UK. It came to my attention that names such as Helmuth, Devilfish, Flood etc were all extremely talented at betting on naff all both pre flop and after the flop.
Being that i normally play very tight, I thought what the hell, lets go and try an aggresive stance for once.

I had some nice pre flop cards in the first few hands of the tourney namely AJ, 88, AQ so whilst i was'nt exactly bluffing I chucked in about 10 - 20% of my stack before the flop (being first to raise). In 3 early hands each time this was called by 1 player. After a no help flop each time, I again bet out with 10 - 20% of my stack. This was met with Re-raises to which i folded.

I had blown 50% of my stack early doors, but was not really worried about that, the point of my post was that every one around the table seemed to be very upset by my actions.

I did'nt really have a problem with this, and thought it would help me now that I was going to tighten my play up.

Bottom line is, is this really bad etiquette or is it just sour grapes on the other players parts. I don't consider myself to be a good player but i fail to understand why people get so offended at aggresive play.

comments appreciated.

What a great post.
You have nailed one of the great contradictions of the game. Poker is all about mis-representation, yet poker players are inherently conservative and do not respond well if you operate outside of their comfort zone.
