Online / Live Games - Skill Difference, Hatchet Harry, 25. Aug 2002 08:37

I know there's been a few threads re online game recently, but as a learner and a person who enjoy's the game but certainly can't make money out of it, im interested on hearing the more serious players view on the differences in skill requirements between online and live games.
I'm only learning holdem, probably due to the PR it recieves so it would be appreciated if the comments could be relevant to this particular game.

The main point of my question is to firstly undertstand what the key skill elements are for both type of game, and secondly wether good players can be equally succesful online as they can in live game when things such as tells and card reading must be a lot harder.

Look forward to recieving your comments.

Regards
HH

Hi Harry

The main differences between the two are the lack of visual tells and the bigger swings. You cannot get the number of tells on people online as you can live. This places more emphasis on stragegy.

Also, the swings are bigger since you play more hands per hour with a smaller edge per hand (due to the lack of visual tells). So emotional control is both harder to maintain and more important.

Other than that I think it plays similiar with corresponding player composition.
