I am about to give up on Online Poker, mickblueeyes, 23. Aug 2002 19:54

I have tried and tried to play online poker at planet poker for a couple weeks and I have gone though money hand over fist. I am playing .25-.50 Stud. I am playing every hand to the best of my ability and knowledge and getting killed.

I start with primo hands and toss the junk. My rate of seeing 4th street is about 10-15%. It never fails though, if I score trips, someone goes full. If I make a straight (which I rarely play) someone gets a flush. I can be four cards to a flush by fourth street with none of my cards up and never hit.

I have analyzed the play of several hundred hands (for better opponent knowledge) and still can't make it work. I am just drawn out on too much. I have had trips to start 4 or 5 times and won one. If the trips are small, I come out raising and reraising, but it never scares the drawing hands off and they fill, I don't. The one trips starting hand I won was with trip queens. Slowplayed them to the end, just checking and calling and no one managed to make straights or flushes. I didn't let anyone see free cards though.

I am not THAT bad of a player. I have noticed that I do better at the .50-1.00 table though. It seems the players there are more likely to take raises seriously.

I need some real advice. I follow low-limit strategy to the "t" and I am losing my butt. Most of these guys are weak players too. Raising from the getgo with a split AK and a 3.

Someone give me some advice! I should be cleaning up against these players!!

If you can't win, you're not as good as you think you are. Planet Poker is a highly reputable site & not for you.

Some responses to your post state that you cannot win online - this is just not true - you certainly can win online! In your specific case, keep in mind that there are numerous good sites to choose from as well as various limits. Perhaps try another site and also perhaps try and play just a little higher as long as it' is still within your comfort zone.
If you are serious about your game and you keep notes on players along with playing at a site that you can win on, then you will do ok in the long run. Good Luck!

Hi, surely one of your main problems is the ante. At such a low limit you are being eaten alive by that 10 cents. This makes you seem a bigger loser than your cards would represent. Try a site without the ante. Don't get me wrong I like PP but I won't play stud there.

A different venue require a different approach.
Ask Roy Cooke or Mike Caro about their early ventures online.

While I cannot play on PlanetPoker other than promotional games under my own name, I do play on other sites. I am winners on them all. Online poker is VERY beatable. For the most part they do not play as well as live. If you can't beat online poker I would recomend reviewing your play.

According to my math analysis of 7 card stud, the maximum potential for action is 16.1 %. Your play style is correct since your are seeing 4th street 10-15 % of the time. At this low limit. most all of the players are playing just for fun and entertainment and not interested in making money. Therefore you should play at a higher limit where the players are more serious and expert, pay attention to your play style and give you some respect.

If you can only afford to play at this low limit, the I suggest you play 7 card stud high-low. For this variation of 7 stud, the max. PFA is 26.2 %. More importantly, most casual low-limit players don't know how to play this variation. Th good players will be playing at the higher limits.

Playing this variation is quite straight forward: Always play for low and start with three cards 7 or below. On 4th street you must catch a card that gives you a 4 card combination to a 7 low or better. You then have three chances to make a 7 low or better, and therefore you can bet and raise for value. Also a low hand will occasionly will became a straight or flush and you will have a chance to scoop the whole pot. I once won $120 playing 7 stud high-low at this limit which was the all time record for the poker game I ran inthe summertime during my college days.

Thank you Harold! Your advice was actually some of the best on this thread. I had hope more people would have given me advice like yours. I will try the higher limit for awhile and read up on hi-lo and give it a shot! Thanks again.
