I am wondering if any one can provide me with the insight as to why Pokerstars has 9 handed tables. have played at a couple online sites (planet being one) and it seems that they have bucked the trend of 10 - is this prefered by some players?

That one less player does in fact increase your tactical considerations..It eliminates one less hand of AA,AK, QQ, possibilities etc as well as the tactical play of that one more person..

9 handed games are good for serious players because your good hands hold up just a little more often.
9 handed games are good for the house because having one less player means the game will run just a little faster and this translates into more hands dealt which equals more rake. More tables eventually open because waiting lists build a little faster, this also means more rake when another table opens.

I think some sites prefer the nine handed as it promotes more games and increases the rake.

Hi, Sky --

I greatly prefer a nine-handed table to a 10-handed one. You must play slightly more conservatively 10-handed, because there are more players who could possibly hold a big hand. The difference isn't quite as trivial as it seems at first.

Mathematically, for instance, there are 45 combinations of possible two-player combinations 10-handed, but there are only 36 9-handed. That's means there are a full 25 percent more possible big hand two-way conflicts with 10 players. Because of this, you must excercise measurably more caution about your starting hands in a 10-handed game, whether online or offline.

Personally, I prefer very short-handed games, so even nine-handed drives me nuts sometimes. Some online casinos prefer nine-handed to 10-handed, because they can spread more games with the same player base and collect about the same amount in rakes (slightly smaller pots, but more hands per hour).

Planet Poker offers five-handed max tables, for those who prefer short-handed. Other online casinos, I think, have tried six-handed.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro
