LL Bankroll Considerations, Dice, 23. Aug 2002 15:46

I've got a question here. It hasn't been that long since I finally got to
the point on the learning curve where I became a winning player (at low
limits). That said, I initially put $50 on Paradise and played .50/1,
didn't get killed by variance, and ran my bankroll up to about $500 over
the course of time (it took a while). Now, being somewhat of an idiot, I
cashed all but $75 out about two weeks ago. Since then, I played off and
on and built it back to $150. This week, I basically just said, "screw
it", when I saw a rather soft and beatable 3/6 game online. I brought my
$150 to the table and promised to play like I had thousands. I broke dead
even that night. I had taken a shot with that tiny bit of money and
neither failed nor succeeded. I went back to the .50/1 tables and sat
there playing two tables bored out of my mind. I thought about how long
it would take to build up to a "real" game. Like any bored individual, I
left the table to find some more risk. I found another good 3/6 game and
sat down. After 1 hour, I was very near being broke. I won a hand with
pocket Jacks (all the while betting hard and praying) and I was back.
Then, I got a truly favorable upswing in variance. I made a run. It was
a slow run that lasted 7 hours. I finished the day with $450 in bankroll.

I live about an hour from Tunica and play there often. I spend every bit
of my winnings and mix my money together, but I remember exactly how much
I have one or lost in the last 10 sessions. So I have no "live" casino
bankroll to speak of. I have an internet bankroll of $450, if one could
even call that a bankroll. I would like to have a bankroll, though.
Ideally, it would be a "dual" bankroll.

I know that everyone is going to reccomend 300BB and for me to go back to
play .5/1 until I hit 600 and move up to 1/2. I just don't know if I can
stand the .5/1 anymore. That suggests that I would have to play another
50+ hours, according to my estimates (I play two tables).

On the other hand, I actually feel like I have something tangible now. I
am a graduate student and I would love to make a little bit on the side.
I have no aspirations of doing anything but making some money on the side.
The am willing to put the $450 up and hope for good variance, but I don't
want to put myself in a situation where I will almost assuredly lose it on
a normal downswing. My largest downswing in a session is us about 30BB
when playing two tables. Trouble is, I know that it can always go lower
at any time. So, what would you do with the $450?

Play .5/1 and move up at $600
Play 1/2
Play 2/4 (these games usually suck)
Play soft 3/6 and hope for the best
Put it all on the line when I find a great higher stakes game, pick out
some good cards, and push it aggressively. (Basically like playing a
minature, somewhat "educated" lotto)

Play the $1/2. $450 isn't enough of a bankroll for regular 2/4 play.

If you are getting bored with 0.50/1, you're gonna start playing badly...

Don't even THINK about the lottery concept!!! Not if you want to play on a regular basis and judge when you can move up again.
