Holdem Newbie Question, Hatchet Harry, 20. Aug 2002 12:42

| Hello, Been playin online NL, PL & Fixed Holdem for about 6 months now (only played live twice), however, in my first 2 months i managed to bag a $1,200 win and a $800 second in a couple of 100+ seat touney's on PS. Strategy I adopted then, is similar to now (i think) in just playin tight and only getting involved when I was almost certain I had the top hand - Sounds easy when ya type it. It is now quite obvious to me that this was entirely beginners luck. Well after 4 dry months and entering tourney's way above my station., i've finnally admitted to myself that this was'nt my secret gift given to me at birth. So I'm asking for help in the form of a couple of questions. Firstly whats the most recomended reading (online or books) that would help me with starting Holdem strategies. Secondly, I tend to make top 25% of tourney's quite often but I get blown out the water when it comes to gamble time. Seems that the rules for playing purely on the strength of your pre flop & after flop hands go clean out the water. Being that reading a player online is a black magic art, Is there any form of simple strategy that should be adopted for the later stages of a tourney or is it simply a case of the more experienced players coming into their own? Probably lame questions which have been answered many times before, but any input that allows me to both continue enjoying the games and even win the occasional one would be nice. Cheers HH | ||

This is tough to answer basically cause tourney play and ring play are two different animals..Also pot limit makes you play better hands cause you cant go all in forcing others to fold marginal or questionable hands and reading skills are definitely a must( online it would be betting patterns..As for limit well you`ll get chased to the river many times.. I really sense you need to learn basics and recommend Lou or lees book to get you started and then Theory Of Poker. Then Bob Ciafones book on nolimit and pot limit > Secondly, I tend to make top 25% of tourney's quite often but I get blown out > the water when it comes to gamble time. You dont specifically state a game or games and I dont know your standards for preflop play.. > Being that reading a player online is a black magic art, Is there any form of > simple strategy that should be adopted for the later stages of a tourney or is > it simply a case of the more experienced players coming into their own? Well theres a saying that says theres a right to first in gets the money usaully in later stages..the thing is variables are many but simply are you betting enough (NLand or PL) to run them out or giving some leway to be called or reraised.what also has been your pattern to that point. Stacks also factor a great deal in your positional play.. > > Probably lame questions which have been answered many times before, but any > input that allows me to both continue enjoying the games and even win the > occasional one would be nice. I sense you need more experience and definite study of good material. jim
