Dear Mr Caro,

I was very pleased to read your article in the late Poker Digest magazine in which you criticised the popularity of tournaments. I don't recall the exact title. It was something like 'My latest rant against tournaments'. I read it in a friend's old copy of the magazine.
Is it online somewhere? Is there an way that you could send me a copy of it, without violating copyright laws?

The reason I ask is that it applies so neatly to what is currently taking place in Great Britain. There has been an explosion of tournament festivals up and down the country. In the year to date there have been festivals in London, Luton, Southampton, Edinburgh, Dundee, Walsall, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Ramsgate, Stockton-on-Tees and Brighton. I know that you probably
don't know the precise geography of the country, but it's a definite glut for sure. The best that can be said for it is that it has stopped British poker nomads going to France! Some of those places have hosted more than one festival.

There is a group of people who go to all of them. Many are staked
by wealthy friends or by cash players who want to have an investment.

In some of these festivals, the tournaments have been of primary importance to the organisers, while the cash games have been secondary at best. This bothers me, because as a cash game specialist, I mainly go to the tournaments to play cash games against the travelling tournament players. Sadly the organisers are almost solely concerned about the total number of entries, because all they want is to have the maximum number of players gambling on the roulette and blackjack tables afterwards.

Your article might help the British poker public graps what is going wrong. I have tried explaining it to people, but as I am not famed for winning a major tournament ( a few small ones but not the big ones), my view is regarded as sour grapes.

P.S. You won't remember me, but we have met. We were seated together in a tournament in Amsterdam, when you visited the Lido casino and gave a talk. I don't know whether you were aware of it at the time, but your photo was taken (sitting next to me) and appeared in the local newspaper 'Het Parool' the next day. I still have copy of it in a drawer.
