| One thing I've been having trouble with is interpreting a tell. I've sat and observed somebody's tell while they were bluffing, but they gave out that same tell when they weren't. What the heck should I do? | ||

| Tells are overrated. A good player will act the same whether they are bluffing or not. A bad player is a bad player and simply playing the cards will allow you to beat them in the long run. Betting limit is also a factor, a bad or inexperienced player will seem "nervous" in some way when betting at high limit games only because they are nervous playing out of their element. They usually are only betting good hands and at best calling with weaker hands. | ||

NOT TRUE: a good player might act differently in order to maximize profit. if a good player is against an unsophisticated opponent, who is not aware enough to know about tells, he will act very differently when he has a strong hand or when he is bluffing. if he is strong, and wants a call, he will tend to move around a lot, and even do crazy things to try to raise suspicion. an unsophisticated opponent will often call when he becomes suspicious...mike caro calls this "the calling reflex." most people who know nothing of tells, ironically, also move and jitter more, and talk more when they have a big hand... against someone who the good player thinks IS watching for tells, strategy must be changed...he might throw a counter-tell in, or try to act the same when bluffing or not, or mix it up randomly. the key is, therefore, to keep your good opponents from knowing that you are watching for tells...if they don't think you are aware, they will generally try to bring out the "calling reflex" in you when they have a big hand, but you won't be fooled. if they are still and unsuspicious, it is more likely that they are bluffing. the point is, however, that the best players do NOT always act the same...if you think they do you might not be watching as closely as you should... >A bad player is a bad player and simply playing the cards will allow you to > beat them in the long run. why not let tells help you beat them even faster...?? hope this helps, john stolzmann | ||

| if they are giving the same tell when they are bluffing or not then you are not observing a tell at all, but rather a betting mannerism that is insignificant to your decision. i think, when first beginning to watch for tells, wait for headsup scenarios, and possibly watch for only one specific tell...here is one that i find very profitable (it is in mike caro's book as well)... suppose that you have AJ or AK and the board is AJ74, and the flop had come with 2 diamonds. your opponent had called your bet on the flop and the turn, and has position on you. now, the 4 of diamonds comes on the river, bringing in the flush...should you bet for value? i reach for my chips as if i am going to bet...if he reaches for his chips, or has chips in his hand, he is probably trying to deter your bet. he will call you, but most likely with a worse hand. this is a safe value bet. if he doesnt reach, you might consider checking the hand. the tell is that if a player is reaching for his chips early, it is probably safe for you to bet...NOTE: this does not necessarily mean that if he does not reach for the chips it is not a safe bet--some players do not exihibit this tell, so no reach cannot determine strength or weakness. ALSO: although reaching for the chips early is a sign of weakness, do not try a bluff in this spot. the player WILL call you, but he simply has a hand that he would rather not have to call a bet with. next time you play, watch for this tell alone, even when you are not in the hand. if you are in a game with a few weak players, you will be sure to see it, and it will help you in situations where you dont want to miss a bet, yet dont want to bet into a scare card. soon, you will automatically recognize this tell, and be able to concentrate on other tells. hope this helps, john stolzmann | ||

Hello Jonathan If the player always bets the same way then that characteristic of the player is not something I would define as a tell. A tell is a mannerism that is different depending on the players holding. In some case it is information gathering (as in looking back to see if they have a flush card) other times it is an act to get you to behave in a certain manner. In other cases it is simply a physical responce to a situation. Take note on what players do DIFFERENTLY in given situations and see if you can define a pattern....People are different....their physical, emotional and psycholgical patterns are not the same.....learn those differences.
