Worst game ever. . ., mickblueeyes, 11. Aug 2002 07:51

For the past two nights of poker I have struggled to break even or make a little over my buyin. I have never seen cards fall like this.

For instance, Omaha has a flop of 10s, As, Ah. I hold Ad and Jd. Turn comes Js. I make my full house. River card is an off card. Some guy who has only played once before whips out the QsKs for the straight flush. He made 3 straight flushes at Omaha that night and didn't even flinch for a tell.

In stud I hold Aces up over 8's in the first four cards. I play them agressively betting 3/4 of the max bet (which usually runs people out) but 60% stayed and the drawing hands beat me, on the river card.

I would get 4 cards to a flush or straight by fourth street in stud with my cards TOTALLY live and couldn't make either. How can you not make a flush in 3 cards when there are none of your suit showing!

I actually went on-tilt a couple times and had to take a break for an hour or so. There was one guy playing who was a jerk. He kept winning and winning and would flaunt it and make snide remarks.

I guess the pokergods have been hating me for the past two nights. Thankfully I have been able to control my losses enough to break even both nights. This kind of thing ever happen to you? Ever play 100% correctly and lose to longshot hands?

blueeyes,

i can't remember a single night that i felt i have played 100% correctly. that said, yes, most of us have run very badly. you would be surprised at how long these bad streaks can last.
still, i can't help but advise you to change your perspective. there is nothing you can do when you make top full house and lose to a straight flush, etc, so there is no sense worrying about it. instead, try to think of possible mistakes that you made during the session--these tend to be the thoughts that frustrate me, but make me better.
i have been known to lose a 1000 dollar pot to an inside straight draw on the river and compliment my opponent on the hand (secretly smiling to myself that he will continue to play poorly, and knowing i had given myself every chance to win the pot). ten minutes later i will be pissed and stewing because i missed a 30 dollar value bet on the river when i knew deep down that it was the correct play...this is somehting i could have changed that would have made me money...
did you miss any bets? make any bad payoffs? how was your image? these are the questions you should be asking--after both winning sessions and losing ones.
there is nothing you can do about bad luck, so you might as well think of aspects of the game that you CAN change to increase your expectation. however, i do sympathize with you on your bad nights--we all do, and we have all been there. hang in there and keep learning.

hope this helps....

Mickblueeyes,
I can feel what your saying. I feel I play by the book most of the time against players who haven't studied poker and still get beat by longshots.... mathmatically speaking, i guess with enough hands played I should start winning but as for now im frustrated.

Good luck,
Craig

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I think that as a young, inexperienced player I tend to expect too much from the game. I am trying to learn to focus more during the game and prepare more for the game so that my mindset isn't so easily rattled when I am outdrawn over and over again. Though you have to admit, having two strong hands cracked by straight flushes in Omaha in a 1 hour period is pretty rattling. LOL! You are right though--I can't do anything about the cards, only how I play them. I did make several good plays last night that actually got me up a little, but I just need to learn to remain focused on the game, I think. Thanks again.

I play hands correctly all the time and lose to a longshot. I have never played 100% correctly in a session. If you think you are playing 100% correctly for a session, you need to improve your play knowledge.

That said, two sessions is not much of a sample as far as fluctuation is concerned. Good players can easily go 100 hours of play playing against opponents with a large gap in abilities and lose.

Keep cool and play your best...It will turn around

Happens to everyone at one time or another. The lower the limit, the more it happens because more people stay in drawing to every conceivable draw. Most players think Omaha is a suck out game but I think Hold em is much worse. At any limit I see pathetic 3 card outs hit all the time.

You were in the worst game ever, had all those bad beats, and still broke even? Boy, I wish I had broken even on my bad nights. Consider yourself lucky. Poker in the short run is all about luck. The fewer the sessions, the greater the impact of luck. If breaking even when you have had the cards run apparently so badly against you was your outcome, well, all I can say is you haven't seen it when Lady Luck is REALLY against you.
