"Tell" frustration, Jonathan Popp, 7. Aug 2002 09:40

I am a young player, a year too young for casinos, but I play in home games quite frequently. I just read "Mike Caro's Book of Tells" a few weeks ago and lately I've been frustrated watching people and looking for tells. It seems to me that I can't possibly watch every single player at the same time, and I usually don't know when the best time to look is! If anybody has any helpful advice I would really appreciate it.

I've read that same book, and experienced the same sort of frustration. I found the best way for me to utilize the information (it's an excellent book) is to wait until it gets down to me and one or two other people.

It's usually easiest to get it to one or two other people if you play premium hands and play them aggressively. That way when you get it heads up you can really pay attention to the other player when the cards come (while they're studying the cards).

People do exhibit the tells Mike describes in his book, and it works. It may save you or gain you only one bet per hand, but that adds up over the course of a night.

Eric.

Hi Jonathan

Watch people as they look at their cards/flop. That means that you don't look at the flop when it comes (It won't go anywhere, they can't change the cards). Watch the players in-between hands and keep your mind focused on reading their mannerism. It takes a while , but with practice reading peoples mannerisms will come to you.

Try focusing first on how and what your opponents are playing. Getting a tell on someone is much easier once you find out what your opponent considers is a good hand or a good situation for a move.

I also have alot of trouble watching everyone, but what i've found works best to find tells ( in low limit poker) is to watch the person who made the last bet/raise. If someone bets and everyone else calls, watch the original bettor as the next card falls.

If someone raises the bettor, switch your attention to the raiser. In low limit games there is usually not too much fancy play, and the last person to bet/raise usually feels a little pressure, making tells easier to find. The callers will usually have second/bottom pair or a draw.

I found this helps to focus my attention. Before I did this I never picked up ANY tells, now I can usually read 3 or 4 people at a table.

The shallow breathing(shoulders quickly raising and lowering) and the shaky hand are the most frequent tells I see. Also, someone mentioned here (a week ago) that when someone stares at the flop, they usually missed a draw, or have a small hand and are trying to figure out what can beat them. I saw the last one a couple of times on the weekend.

Good luck

Mark

The tell that I read about in Caro's book which freaked me out the most was the one where your opponent glances, for just a split second, at his chips after he sees the next card fall. This means this person has a very good hand.

I have never seen this tell and then later found the person to be bluffing or even to have a marginal hand, it's always been a powerhouse. They don;t have any idea they're doing it either! The subconcious is too powerful.
