| Mike and Roy, Let me first start out by saying I Love Poker. I like it so much that I constantly think about leaving my 40K a year job to play for a living. I kept some records of my play over the past 4 months, ive made 32 trips in which ive profited 26 of the 32. Ive averaged $11.32 an hour playing in a $5-10 game. Im also do very well in poker tournaments. I recently got back from Vegas where I won a 10 person satelite whice I ended up making it to the final table and placed 9th out of 72. The next morning played in another tourney which I won, and the following day at the same tourney I placed 3rd. I also did very well at the Bellagio cash games, mainly 4-8 holdem. Alright my point is this is something that I would love to do and would probably regret it later if I didn't atleast try. Can u give me some words of encouragement, or discouragement. Any advice at all would help, like places u would play or stay away from, what table limits and starting bankroll a person would need to avg. $200 a day, etc.....Thanks Josh | ||

The competition is getting better and better and the rake keeps getting higher. The trend in poker is that it is losing value for the pro player. If a new good market opens (Florida) that may change, but right now things are getting tougher every year. It is a Roy Cooke opinin that poker is a great hobby and a poor profession. The demands of the profession over time tends to destroy the souls of those who attempt it. It is demanding , stressful and requires a consistancy of effort and emotional stability that few seem to be able to master. Four months is not a good indication of how you will do over the course of time. Are you intellectually inclined? The pro poker world is full of the worlds best minds and you will be competing against them. Do you plan on having a family in your future? Poker can be very stressful on relationships. I would think there are less than 500 players that can support any sort of a lifestyle from playing poker. Not many in the scope of the world and the 500 have a changing of the guard every year. There are almost no pros that were pros 10 years ago. They tend to lose their skills over time. Beating 5-10 is not much of a life. If you have the skills to beat the mid to high limit games, you will do better financially in another profession. When making this decision think in the terms of your whole life and future. That said, poker has been very good to me personally (although I am an oddity :-)! If you take it on.....Good Luck Roy Cooke | ||

| josh-- my advice would be to log in a lot more hours, and play higher limits if you want to make 200 dollars per day. trust me (as i tried to go semi-pro this summer) it is tougher than it seems. prior to the summer i had also taken 31 trips, for a total of 700 hours of play. i made 34 dollars an hour playing mostly 15/30 and sometimes lower. however, this summer i am making a mere 5 dollars per hour--not exactly where i wanted to be. part of this is because i lost 6000 playing much higher limits than i usually do on my trip to san diego (a foolish decision) but i still didnt make close to a big bet an hour in my regular 15-30 and 30-60 games. in addition, i feel as if poker has consumed my life for the summer. i am actually getting sick of the game i love. i can't wait to be back in school this fall...professional poker might never be for me...but it will always be a profitable hobby... i know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but i think it is what you needed to hear. my advice is to "keep your day job." john stolzmann | ||

| I tried it for a year, and frankly, I got bored out of my skull. After a while, it became a very tedious activity for me. There are others that enjoy it even after several years of 30+ hours per week, but I wasn't one of them. Just make sure you have something to fall back on if you find yourself bored like I was. | ||

| Curious all the responders seem to equate going pro with B&M casinos - what about online poker? I've made a great living at it for the past 2 years, especially as the US dollar buys twice as much here in Australia! You can play more than one game at the same time, lower rake, no tipping, much faster play, weaker opponents - why even consider playing at casinos? (Unless you're one of the high rollers of course.) | ||

| JDP, Nice perspective. I have no choice -- no B&M casinos near me. Can you provide us with a brief bio? E.g., I started playing five years ago; I read the following books; I started playing 0.5/1; I progressed this quickly, etc. Thanks. on 10. | And tell people how to improve their games so I make less money? I think not... I leave that to the people who CAN'T make a good living at this game (i.e. the vast majority). | ||
