money not lost is money won, john stolzmann, 5. Aug 2002 17:56

two days ago i possibly lost a lot of money on a hand. however, i lost at least 40 dollars more than i should have...and possibly much more. the hand was very borderline to begin with, so possibly i should not have played it at all. futhermore, i lost extra money due to a possibly misinterpreted tell...the $30-60 hand played as follows...

two bad players (very loose, played horribly after the flop, both calling stations) limped in from first and third position. the player directly to my right raised. this player, who is generally a decent player, was in the game for four racks--it was effecting his judgement, and he was on tilt. he had been complaining a lot about his luck, and was viewing everything in a negative way (a few hands earlier he flashed me pocket aces in disgust facing a dangerous board--followed by a payoff when he knew he was beat.
i was in the cutoff and looked down to Qh Jh. the button had his hand ready to fold and the small blind was holding 4 chips, ready to call. i decided to call the raise. this may seem like a questionable play. however, due to the fact that the two limpers played very weak, the raiser was on tilt, and the flop would be seen 5-6 handed depending on whether the big blind called, the call seemed like an easy one. i could get rid of my hand easily if i was in trouble, and i had position.
the small blind called, the big blind folded, and then something strange happend. one of the bad players reraised. usually i suspect aces or kings, and possibly AKs or AQs in this spot, but due to the nature of the player, and the fact that i have never seen this play out of him, i am unsure what to think...the third position player calls, the original raiser calls, and i call along with the small blind. we take the flop 5 handed.
the flop comes Ah 8h 4h. i have the second nuts. the small blind checks, the limp-reraiser bets, the third position player calls, the tilting player calls, and i raise...i want the Kh or any set to pay the full amount to draw out on me. the small blind folds, the limp-reraiser makes it three-bets. at this point i am fairly sure he has flopped a set of aces. the third position player folds and the tilter calls, flashing his hand to the player to his right, who he is friends with.
i love it when he flashes the hand. i feel that he is showing his friend that he has the lone Kh--maybe even AK with the king of hearts, and he is trapped in the middle. he IS, of course, viewing everything negatively.
i four-bet, confident that i have the best hand. the bad limp-reraiser caps it off at five bets. i am still confident that he has a set of aces--he isnt good enough to know where he is at in the hand, only how strong his own hand is. the tilter and i call.
the turn comes a complete blank. the capper leads at the flop, the tilter calls, and i raise again...this time the limp-reraiser doesnt raise...he seems to have taken the hint that he is beat.
however, the tilter now makes it three bets. cuss words ran through my mind. i just knew he had Kh Th, or some other hand that made the nut flush. i was drawing dead. however, the pot was just too big. maybe he had a set, or a lower flush, and the tilt was getting the best of him. i had only $100 in front of me. i was in a bad frame of mind, and threw it all out there, raising another 40 all in--in my mind at the time i was going to pay off the river either way, due to the pot size. this was the most foolish thing i could have done.
the river came a 4, pairing the board. the tilter took a small stack of chips and banged it on the table as hard as he could--knowing he had been drawn out on again. the sound startled some of the omaha players on the table next to us. still, the limp reraiser checked the river, and after calming down a bit the tilter turned over his Kh 5h. the limp reraiser showed the Th 9h. we had all flopped flushes.

if i hadnt raised all-in on the turn i would have saved 40 dollars. there would have been no bets on the river. i felt so stupid, and took my 3 blue chips and walked away. when i get close to being all in, sometimes my decisions get much worse...i fail to realize that the few extra chips saved really count and just "try to get all in." i have now learned not to do this anymore. the money saved is money earned. i could use that 40 dollars--instead i threw it away.

furthermore, i might have misunderstood the tell when the tilting player flashed his hand. he probably flashed the nuts to the other player as if to say, "how am i going to get drawn out on this time?"
maybe i should have slowed down with my hand. however, i did have solid reasons to believe that the limp-reraiser had aces and he had a bare Kh...but maybe someone can offer me some advice on how i could have lost less.

thanks for listening,

john stolzmann

I think you have it all firured out how you could have lost less.

That said, it was a small error as far as expectaion was concerned. If you were paying it off anyway most of the time you were going broke. Plus, in some scenarios there might be a gian in the way you played your hand if it was good and you aquired an extra bet out of the possible set.
