| As mentioned in previous posts, I am somewhat new to the game (under a year) and I am thinking of playing at a casino in Tunica for the first time this year, mostly to gain experience. I keep track of my home game winnings and keep my bankroll separate from my other finances. Over the past year I have turned about 15 bucks into a little over 200 at nickel/quarter spread. I know that pales in comparison to most other bankrolls, but hey, I am a college kid :) Mike has given me some great advice on the subject, but would like some other opinions as well. Never having been to a casino at all, what should I expect? What limits are available to play at which games? What is the ettiquette for chip buying, buying in and play in Casinos? I don't want to show up at a table looking like a fish or embarrass myself. | ||

| Having recently been through this, the best advice I can give is to tell people you are new and ask a lot of questions. I've only played in three different rooms, and each had a little different protocol. One preffered you buy chips before you sat down, and another would seat you and then have a runner get you chips. But telling the floorman and dealer that you are new to the game and asking sensible questions about procedures and protocol is absolutely a must. Don't worry about what other players think about you. As a matter of fact, as savvy as you seem to be about the game, its to your advantage for them to judge you as a very weak player. Just keep in mind what their image of you is. You might get played back at quite a bit with some of the more aggressive player trying to push you off hands. Oh, and DON'T FORGET TO TOKE THE DEALER!! I always forget, but I'll remember on the next hand when I see the winner toke. You'll run into the rare butt munch that will complain if you breach protocol, but the vast majority of players and casino employees are very helpful and nice. Hope this helps, and good luck! JT | ||

| So what kind of spread limits do casinos offer on 7 card stud and Texas Hold'em? How many "big bets" worth of cash do I need to play correctly? Will they let you sit and watch for a few minutes before you begin to get a feel for the game? How should I attire myself--what kind of image is best to portray? How should I adjust my play since the players will be much tighter than my normal home-game opponents? Any first time faux pas's I should try to avoid? Thanks. | ||

Different casinos offer different limits...Start at a limit you can afford and you are comfortable with....Playing below that limit the first couple of times you play would be a good idea until you get more comfortable in public games. > > How many "big bets" worth of cash do I need to play correctly? Buy-in 20 times the upper limit. The first couple of times you play I would set a stop-loss limit at 20 big bets. I don't generally recomend stop-loss limits, however, when this is your first play, going off badly can create a poor psycological mindset for your future. > > Will they let you sit and watch for a few minutes before you begin to get a feel for the game? They should...Just don't hang over a player...Sometimes they get mighty pissed off when you do that. > > How should I attire myself--what kind of image is best to portray? Wear clothing you are relaxed in. I would recomend that you not look like a pro....no sunglasses.....or baseball caps. I think the best image is a playful image. You will get good action and not drive any players from the game. and that image is a fun one too! > > How should I adjust my play since the players will be much tighter than my normal home-game > opponents? I assume you will be playing reasonably small limit......They may play tighter, but they are still going to be defined as loose by public poker standards.....Play tighter starting requirements...I would recomend that you get some poker books and read them before you a start....If you have a reasonable understanding of the books you read you should be able to beat most low-limit poker games. Go to WWW.conjelco.com to order poker books. > > Any first time faux pas's I should try to avoid? Don't go on tilt...Don't be intimidated....Take your time....Think and go prepared. > > Thanks. | Thanks for the advice. I have read just about everything of Caro's, some of Slansky's and just finished Roy West's 7 card stud. I am gonna grab Krieger's Hold em excellence and some of Caro's reports. Any other suggestions? Does Supersystem deal with low limits at all? | ||
