Low limit tells, Mark, 2. Aug 2002 06:03

| As a new player to casinos I am playing only low limit games ( 4-8, 5-10), but I have already picked up on one huge tell. The shallow, quick breathing is very obvious and many of the people I play against seem to do it. When a player is breathing like this, no matter how hard they try to hide it, they're shoulders always (slightly) raise and lower quickly. What are some other obvious tells I should look for in a low limit game? I've also seen the obvious sigh, and once in a while I pick up on the shaking hand. The heavy breathing is the only thing that has saved me money though. Mark | ||

| One thing that i see often is those who stare at the flop are drawing or missed..NEVER watch the flop watch the players respond... Remember as well not every tell is the same for all players..So study the player(s) before making these decisions... I have mikes tapes on tells and i recommend it highly jim | ||

I also have a theory about people looking back at their hand, on the flop, and then raising. It seems that alot of the time, especially if the flop is garbage, they made bottom two pair or a lowly straight. They look back because they want to be sure their rag hand just turned to gold. Its usually someone who calls alot, is in the blind, or just won a big hand ( or a few small hands) and is playing the rush. Someone with AA, AK, a flush, or something else you want to get regulary, doesn't need to look back because their excited with what they have and remember it. If a confident looking bet comes after the look, I will usually fold a medium hand. What do you think? I haven't tested this much but its saved me money twice, and it hasn't cost me any. Mark

| I remember 0ne lady who agonized over every single decision and could never put her on a hand...whether it be bottom pair or the nuts..she would always react exactly the same throughout the hand..needless to say I had tremendous difficulty against her and made sure when we faced off i was holding complementing cards to the board if i continued..... She would notoriously check call all the way through if raised and hit so many friggin long shots... I learned through trial and error that each person is unique in their mannerisms ..but still at very low limits there are common denominators.. jim | ||

| I play with a lady that agonizes over her decisions as well. Its almost like she never know what she has, and invariably will turn over the stone cold nuts. Luckily, she's only in when she's got the best of it and most of the time I just avoid her. I haven't played much live play, about five 10+ hour sessions. But I almost laugh out loud at some people's mannerisms at the table. Like a couple of people that you could see counting on their fingers when they draw to a straight. You can see them tapping on the felt with each of their fingers, one, two, three, four, five, "I'll bet." Okay, I trust you! :) JT | ||

| In my home game, we occasionally play Dealer's Choice when enough people are getting tired of Hold'em. I take this opportunity to choose Draw, especially when there are some new faces. I like live draw because it's a good way to learn a player's tells. There is very little distraction and most of the time I've found tells in this game are consistent. There is one guy who plays relatively conservatively and his eyes are the key to reading him. If he's looking at the action or his hand, I can bet very marginal hands. However, another player will watch the action when he's interested, and stare at his cards when he's not. These same players will also re-organize their holdings when holding trash, but tend to close and protect their hand when dealt two-pairs or better. It's more difficult for me to notice those subtleties in specific player's tells in a game like Hold'em or Omaha because the board is close to the action as well. Another tell that I've seen that has made me money is when a player doublechecks his own hand when a suited flop comes. As of yet, I have gotten into a situation where this tell can not be used. (I hope it stays that way.) -maymay | ||

| One thing to be aware of in draw poker is that the same tell may mean different things in different players. Some players, for example, go into a huddle for a long time before betting when they have the nuts, while others do exactly the same on a bluff. Learn to associate a particular mannerism with a particular player, and don't get fooled into thinking that the so-called "universal tells" always mean the same. The wonderful tells from "Mike Caro's Book of Tells" are a good starting point, but individual tells are worth a lot, and you should pay attention to them. Supposedly, for example, some players stare fixedly at their cards when their hand is weak, and that is often true, but you should be aware of the exceptions, because some players stare intently at their cards when their hand is very strong. Some players, when passed to, bet instantly when they have good hands, while in other players that is a tell for their bluffing. The lower the limit, the more likely players are to have tells and patterns; just be aware that the same tells may have opposite meanings in different players. Interestingly, by the way, is this phenomenon is observable in on-line poker, too. Who says on-line players don't exhibit tells? Try Planet Poker's draw games sometime--which nicely fit into the small game category--to see what I mean. And I'm not even going to get into situational tells here, which are particularly prevalent in draw poker. You're picking a good game when it's your choice, maymay. Personally I prefer lowball in dealer's choice games, more dealer advantage. But draw poker is a good alternative. | ||
