Later Stages of Tournaments, Flop Lag, 2. Aug 2002 00:19

I play in occasional small tournaments both live and online. I have a conservative style that works well in the early stages of tournaments but not in the later stages. The result is that I usually finish ahead of most of the people in the tournament and make the final table, but get knocked out just before finishing in the money. Can you give me any tips as to how one's style of play should change in the later stages of a tournament?

If players are moved to your table you have the advantage of your image.Since your being a conservative player most will respect your raises...So whenever you get to be first in raise and if your reraised you MUST consider the player and his style etc..
Always make it the first thing you do is to study new players...
If your moved to different table your greatly handicapped cause you know nothing of the opposition...This to me is the breaking point of whether you fair well or get busted..HOW WELL DO YOU ADAPT..
Aggression is the major factor but you still must have something most of the time to make a play asuming you have a fair stack..A low stack you must be patient and wait till the very best possible likely best hand you`re going to get and play it..
If your stack is low and you raise into a large stack you WILL get called and then likely be put all in..So if the sitaution arises make the hand you play fairly decent against the large stack behind you..But if the big stack is ultra tight and thats why he`s a leading stack then he might just fold a marginal hand to keep his position....
You really prefer small stacks behind you when raising..
On xxx flops dont be afraid to make a play when one or two players have checked...Three or more players your facing a likely check raise..They`re more likely to fold late in the tourney but would call you in the early stages....
These are basic ideas cause you didnt state the game being limit ,pot ,or no limit...
You would never play these games similiar..Position becomes of major consideration as you move up the ladder...
I could go on but I need more info..

I have exactly this same problem when playing in NLHE tournaments. I can consistantly get to the last table. Most of the time I am playing really tight careful and a lot of the time I am getting short stacked by then. I seems to be when it gets to the last 6-7 players where I fall down. I've got a lot of 5th places under my belt.
Would appreciate any expansion on this subject.

go to pokerpages or maybe even Planetpoker and listen to Mikes audio about nolimit betting.. I believe its about 10 minutes in length...Position, reading players, betting and semi bluffing are the key components to nolimit in MY opinion...
