Low limit success?, Dan Liebl, 1. Aug 2002 12:22

Hello All,

I am 24 and have been playing poker my whole life but never really took it seriously until a coupld years a go. I am still low on money in general so i play a tournament and open tables about once a week.

I am a break even player (2002 tally is right now a loss of 150 dollars) Which is fine, but this keeps me stuck at the $2-$4 game. Is there a way to actually be successful at low-limit? It seems to me i get rivered too much(perhaps just a bad string of cards) but people stay in on some horrid hands and they beat me. Is it time for me to take a risk on my small bankroll and try a $4-$8 table? or higher?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dan

Hi Dan

I would recommend that you read some poker books before stepping up. You should step up when you are mentally and emotionally prepared to, not because you feel players will draw out on you less if you play higher. First, I do not believe that you will recieve less drawouts. Second, you should welcome players trying to draw out if the odds are not there as you get the best of the bet in those situations.

As a general rule if you cannot beat a given limit, stepping up in limits is not the correct answer. Study the game and beat the limit you are at before stepping up.

Take it from one low limit player..... you will not experience fewer drawouts at 4-8 then at 2-4. I sometimes play 15-30 and still experience draw-outs that make my stomach turn. Many times, particularly on-line, I've noticed the 5-10 game being much more conservative and tight then the 10-20 or 15-30. It's odd.....

I began by playing in a .25-1.00 home game where winning $20 bucks was big money. I read everything I could get my hands on, beat that home game consistently, and then moved up to 1-5 stud. If you play sound, by the book poker, you can beat lower limits on a routine basis.

As Roy stated, once you feel comfortable that you can win at your current level, then move up to the 4-8. From my exerience it's the same game as 2-4, just larger pots.
