Poker Question - 88 SB, Barry T, 31. Jul 2002 00:12

Hi. I hold 88 in the SB. I tight pro limps UTG. A loosish button raises. What should I do?

In practice, I raise, which kills the BB and tight limper. Only the button calls. Flop is 776 with two diamonds. I bet, button calls.

Turn is 8d. Check or bet?

Hi Barry

Once again, the answer is a funtion of your opponent. If your opponet is an aggressive player that will think that you have nothing if you check, you should check-raise and hope he has a diamond that he is drawing dead to (or better yet be slowplaying a worse hand). If he is the sort that likes to raise the turn, you may want to consider betting in the hopes of three-betting the turn.

If your opponet is the type that is intimidated by you, the sort that always checks if a flush is present or is passive, you should bet and hope that he will draw to a flush or pay you off with a high Ace or worse pair.

When you can, with reasonable accuracy predict what your opponents will do based on their emotional state and knowledge, then make correct plays based on that information, you will be a World Class Player.
