Psychological Counseling needed :)

Over the years, I've started to develop an interesting phobia. Despite being, IMHO, a fairly strong poker player with a good 10 year run of profit I've gotten to the point where I constantly worry about subjecting my bankroll to ruin. The bankroll is really insignifigant compared to my income, it's ten time over my initial cash outlay and is strictly for gambling so I can't figure out why I'm so emotionally attached to it. At this point I think I have the game to move up limits, my bankroll is 200X the big bet but I feel i don't play properly at this higher level because I'm worried about my chips. I've stopped playing in tournaments because I dislike playing short stacked even though I've had a fairly good profit at them.

So the obvious answer is to play where I'm comfortable and maintaining a profitable expecatation but has anyone else experienced a similar reaction?

Get over it! If you step out and start playing and do well your confidence will grow. You will adjust mentally and emotionally to the new limits with experiance at that limit. You have to get that experiance.

If you really know what you are doing, you will make more money and improve your skills at the higher limit.

Just go for it. Faint hearts don't win fair maidens :-)

Hi Cadillac- Well....you certainly won't be driving a Cadillac if you are afraid to fail because of your "irrational" fear of busting. I took the opposite route and said, oh well...If I don't try I cannot succeed ! Remember, even Roy started somewhere, right? The ONLY way to move up is to do so, sans "fear". Next time you have a nice win, use that money to "freeroll" into a higher limit game. That way, you won't feel like you are playing with your "real" bankroll. If you lose that cash, ok....go back to your regualar game and do it again and again until you extinguish your "irrational fear". IF you are going to be truely successful at poker, you MUST not think of "money" per se. Rather, just think about playing each hand well and doing that time and time again. Eventually, the money will take care of itself. And....REMEMBER Babe's motto at all times: "Look Good, Play Good". No crying in poker.... Good Luck - Babe

I know what you mean.I've been there, and it's not a good place to be.
Took a heavy hit and had to slowly rebuild a bankroll at low limits.Became VERY
protective of that bankroll.
It's paralyzing.It's debilitating.
And saying"GET OVER IT!!"to myself didn't help.
I couldn't "get over it"so I decided to "get past it".
Took HALF my roll and designated it as "therapy money".When I played,I wasn't concerned about win/lose sums, just playing my best game.
That was my mantra."JUST PLAY THE GAME".
Worked for me.Hope it helps.
