Moving up to higher limits, uncanick, 27. Jul 2002 07:40

A player new to casino poker had a nice win and was seeking advice on moving to a higher limit.
It was suggested that playing 20 or so more sessions while keeping an accurate record of the results would be helpful.
Another player who had done that[and recorded a win total of $187 at 4-8 and 5-10]asked about moving to 10-20.
Any thoughts on this matter?

I don't think the limit is much of a funtion of game selection unless you cannot afford a loss or wish to not play higher than a given limit for personal reasons. Game selection is a funtion of the ability of your opponents vs. your capabilities at that time. Often you will see a higher game be much softer than a smalller game.

Base your game selection on the spread in ability between yourself and your opponets NOT on the size of the limit (I am assuming you are bankrolled for both games).

I feel 4-8 is a good limit for someone new to casin opoker to be playing. If of course you desire the risk associated with a higher limit this advice may be wrong for you. However I suggest you form a dedicated BankRoll or at least
dedicate yourself to keeping a accurate set of records concerning your play.
play for at least 300 ot 1000 hours at this starting limit. During and after this time you should be studing those records so you know how you are preforming and in which game type you are best/worst at. Then after compiling a adiquate database on your play and its result you will be better equiped to make a educated and rational decision on whether to move up in limits.

Good Luck

Hi, uncanick --

I think the main thing to keep in mind is that when you "promote" yourself to a higher level, that doesn't mean you must play at that level. It just means that you're expanding the number of limits that you're willing to consider by adding a higher one.

You should still choose to play the best game at any given time. That's usually the one that combines the highest hourly profit expectation at an acceptable risk.

I feel there are a few criteria that must be addressed one is how effecient is my decision making which would be the result of the following ......
am I a studious person ( study- play- analyze) and delve into the game for self betterment or am I just happy playing along and gaining knowledge through the school of hard knocks..So its a matter of where you want to be now or down the road...
When i`m thinking of higher stakes I`m considering my opportunity realistically to be competitive..
As in any limit you`ll find every variation of game composition...
